Institute for the Training of Journalists of the Passauer Neue Presse e.V.

Making visions reality – support for young journalists from the Dr. Hans Kapfinger foundation, Neue Presse Verlags-GmbH and Passau university

Students at Passau University are offered an opportunity to train as a journalist alongside their studies; the training corresponds fully to the traditional trainee programmes of the daily newspapers.

At the beginning of each winter semester, applications are invited for a new session of training. Each year, up to six students are selected from the applicants. The students do their practical training out of term-time in various editorial departments of Passauer Neue Presse.

Following this basic training, which usually lasts 15 months, a further five months must be spent working for other German or foreign media. This can include both radio and television stations and press offices of large companies or of state or European bodies. At least six one-week seminars must also be attended.

After 20 months of practical training, a certificate confirms the completion of training as a journalist.

Conditions for eligibility:

  • Applicants must be studying at the university; they can be attending any course.
  • Applicants should be not older than 24.
  • Each year, up to six grant-holders are accepted.
  • A selection body decides on admissions.
  • The selection process takes place at the beginning of each winter semester.
